Beer Distribution Simulation

Dr. Deming said "without theory, there is no learning." To help us make sense of our experience in the world, we must be able to relate that experience to some coherent, explanatory story.

The Beer Distribution Game demonstrate a particular theory about dynamic behavior. It also can serve as a starting point for turning raw data into a set of relationships. Once relationships are made explicit and precise, the theory of the Beer Game can further guide us to test the causal relationships through direct observation, data analysis, or group process deliberation. The game also offers prescriptions for effective action and provides a good starting theory from which we can develop further insights into the nature of our specific systems.

The Beer Distribution Game is a three hour exercise that was developed to introduce people to the concept of "System Dynamics". It was originally developed by Prof. John Sterman of MIT and has been used by groups of various sizes ranging from 4 people to 24. The only prerequisite, besides some basic math skills, is that none of the participants have played the game before.
